The following is a press release from Jackson State University.
[Verbatim] JACKSON, Miss. – Jackson State University’s College of Business will host HBCU Entrepreneur’s Week March 27–29, 2023. The three-day conference is held in collaboration with the solutions-oriented ecosystem intelligence company, Ecosystem Resource and event partners, ITmaskinen, Mapsol, XRHQ and Intursep, Inc.
Since 2020, the U.S. Government has earmarked approximately $1.1 trillion annually in Contractual Services and Supplies. Of this amount, 26.01% or $145.7 billion is contracted with small businesses, with an additional $82 billion going to small business subcontracts. (source: SBA)
“Unfortunately, many entrepreneurs, startups, and small business owners are unaware of this,” shares Sharon Simmons, Ph.D., associate professor of accounting, finance and entrepreneurship at JSU. “Another thing that most people do not realize is the vast area of products and services the U.S. government procures. We intend to change this by highlighting these often-missed revenue opportunities and sharing what it takes to land a government contract.”
The mission of HBCU Entrepreneur’s Week is to make interdisciplinary entrepreneurship experiences, opportunities, and resources accessible to students, alumni, faculty, and staff from all 101 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), as well as local business owners and community members interested in learning more and engaging in the ecosystem. These biannual hybrid events are hosted at a different HBCU each spring and fall, plus LIVE streamed and recorded to provide optimal access to content.
“I feel like we need to make sure that we’re providing equality in every single aspect of our communities, and I think that ensures safer and thriving communities,” says Ecosystem Resource Founder Thomas Hallin. “Jackson State is such a prominent research university, and with innovation and entrepreneurship, there is a huge opportunity to develop more rural entrepreneurship.”
The Spring conference at Jackson State University will feature presenters from government agencies, industry consultants, faculty researchers, and case studies by entrepreneurs who have gone through the government procurement process. A new addition to the program includes blocks of time for pre-scheduled Business Speed-dating, which allows for one-on-one meetings with government agencies and industry consultant experts.
