Innovate Mississippi celebrates three years of partnership with Microsoft in supporting CoBuilders, a statewide startup accelerator that has become a launching pad for innovative Mississippi companies. This milestone reflects not only Microsoft’s commitment as a sponsor but also the enduring impact of the CoBuilders program on Mississippi’s economy.
CoBuilders, managed by Innovate Mississippi, empowers Mississippi entrepreneurs by providing training, mentorship, funding and resources to help grow their businesses and bring impactful technologies to market. Thanks to the collaboration, 35 companies have participated in the CoBuilders accelerator program across three cohorts, receiving more than $1.22 million in total direct investments and access to an additional $16,000 each in vouchers for critical services.
JJ Townsend, Microsoft’s Community Engagement Lead for Mississippi, emphasized the value of this collaboration: “Innovation can come from anywhere, but for many entrepreneurs, securing funding and opportunities can be a significant challenge. Microsoft TechSpark’s partnership with CoBuilders has shown us that with the right support and resources, entrepreneurs can not only overcome challenges but also reach remarkable heights of success.” Townsend’s words underscore Microsoft’s commitment to empower communities by working with local partners to provide the technology, skills, and support they need to thrive.
Mississippi startups in the CoBuilders accelerator have thrived, securing $507,500 in initial investments and an additional $712,500 from sources like the Seed Fund and Investors. Beyond funding, CoBuilders participants have benefited from mentorship and networking opportunities with industry leaders, investors, and corporate partners. The accelerator has fostered a supportive community that encourages collaboration and innovation. CEO of Innovate Mississippi, Tony Jeff, expressed his gratitude: “This partnership has been a game-changer for Mississippi startups. Microsoft’s support enables us to give entrepreneurs the tools and connections they need to succeed.”
Several success stories have emerged from CoBuilders’ ranks. MAPP Network, founded by Justin Bernard O’Keefe, helps funeral homes connect families with financial planners, assisting them in navigating end-of-life planning. O’Keefe credits the program and Innovate Mississippi’s team for connecting him with the Mississippi Angel Network and investors, positioning MAPP for rapid growth.
RebornC, a sustainability-driven startup by Dr. Zhe Qiang and Mark Robertson, stands out. Their innovative technology transforms plastic waste into carbon materials that utilities can use for energy-efficient heating. The company won a $25,000 proof-of-concept award, fueling its journey towards reducing industrial CO2 emissions.
SellVntg, founded by Owen Ridgeway, David Markham, and Preston Rollins, launched a marketplace that brings together vintage fashion lovers. Humo, another startup, developed a “smart sock” for golfers to track their swing and improve their game. Shovel, created by Ben Street and AJ Davidson, is tackling the logistics of mineral resource ownership with an app that streamlines the process for contractors and landowners. Each of these startups exemplifies the creativity and drive that CoBuilders aims to foster and the innovation that Microsoft seeks to enable.
As CoBuilders grows, so does its impact on the Mississippi startup ecosystem. Partnerships such as Microsoft’s investment in the state are crucial for expanding the program’s reach and resources, ensuring that Mississippi entrepreneurs continue to have opportunities to grow and thrive. Regional partners, investors, and incumbent companies contribute to a culture of innovation that strengthens Mississippi’s economy and enhances its reputation as a hub for technology and entrepreneurship.
Through continued collaboration with Microsoft, the CoBuilders program remains dedicated to helping entrepreneurs turn their ideas into successful ventures. This partnership is a powerful example of how public-private collaboration can drive economic growth and support technological advancement in communities across Mississippi and beyond.
As CoBuilders looks to the future, this third anniversary of its partnership with Microsoft isn’t just a milestone—it’s a testament to how collaboration fuels innovation.
